Naxos : We chose to stay on Naxos because we wanted to experience a calm, less touristy but still beautiful Greek island, and Naxos did not disappoint. We enjoyed 5 days of beautiful beaches, gorgeous sunsets, delicious meals, cheap tasty wine, and of course the charming blue-and-white buildings and pools everywhere. One day we rented an ATV and drove around looking for more secluded beaches and accidentally discovered a few nude beaches.

We highly recommend Naxos to anyone looking for a less touristy but still thoroughly enjoyable island in the Cyclades island chain.

Athens : We spent only a day and a half in Athens, but given all the smoking and unrefrigerated milk it was enough for me. The first afternoon we did some light exploring and checked out the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Olympic Stadium used in the 2004 Olympics. Then we climbed up to Lycabettus Hill from where you could see all of Athens, including some great views of the Parthenon and the sunset (there’s a funicular to take you most of the way up the hill, but the guidebooks don’t mention that it’s still a decent hike up to get to the base of the funicular). The next day we did the walked up to the Parthenon, did some shopping in Plaka, checked out a few more ruins, watched the changing of the Parliament Guards, and then had a lovely dinner on Apostolou Pavlou in Thissio with a spectacular nighttime view of the Parthenon.

Venice : Jed and I spent two lovely days in Venice. The narrow streets and canals were like nothing I'd seen before. We spent a few hours at the Doge's Palace and ferried over to the island of Murano- famous for its blown glass. The best of course was the yummy gnocchi and other dishes at the little off-the-beaten path restaurants.

Santorini : After a quick ferry from Naxos, we arrived at Santorni and were greeted by its amazing geography. What a change a 2 hour ferry makes - Santorini is high, mountainous and extremely active. What really defines Santorini are its wonderful views - a gift from the ancient volcano which exploded 3,600 years ago. All of the cities are perched on the rim of the caldera left behind by the volcano. As an example, our trip up from the ferry dock involved over half-a-dozen switchbacks to get to the top.

We spent our days enjoying our pool and exploring Oia, doing some shopping, eating, and of course catching some of Oia’s picturesque sunset views. We also rented a Smart Car for a day and drove around to some of Santorini’s beaches. Unlike Naxos’ soft, white sandy beaches, the beaches on Santorini are almost all volcanic in nature - which makes them very interesting but overall I prefer white sand. Aside from the wonderful views and crazy beaches, the highlight of our trip was probably our visit to the Santorini Mou tavern where we ate wonderful food, were serenaded by the owner, and generally had a great time. They added our picture to their big book so we’ll have to go back in 10 or 20 years and find our young selves.

Rome : Rome was quite the adventure! We spent 5 days soaking in the beautiful architecture and artwork. We spent an afternoon at the Vatican and Sistine Chapel, ate tons of gelato, and spent a full day exploring with Bea and Will. Jed led the four of us to the Coliseum, Palatine Hill, Ancient Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps.

Cinque Terra : We spent two pleasant days in Cinque Terra on the Italian riviera. The room we rented was in the town of Vernazza owned by the proprietor of the local gelateria. Vernazza has the only natural harbor of the 5 towns and also has a nice little beach. But we mainly used the harbor for its amazing restaurant which served the best pesto gnocchi ever.

On the first day, we did the hike from Vernazza to Corniglia which is up in the hills. The next day we trained to Riomaggiore and then took the Via del Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola. Then we trained all the way to Monterosso in the north and walked around its lovely beaches and both its old and new town. We even hiked up to see an old church and cemetery built way up on a hilltop with great views of the town below.
